Strays

In Spain we unfortunately are confronted with numerous stray animals. They vary from wild (undomesticated) dogs and cats, donkeys, birds, rabbits etc to pedigree dogs or cats that have been abandoned or have gone astray. As you can imagine these are animals from unknown origin and may carry all kinds of infectious diseases and / or show any kind of dangerous behaviour.

Any animal of unknown origin that is presented at our clinic will be scanned for a microchip. Remember it is obligatory for every dog cat and ferret in Andalucia to be identified by microchip. With the number of the microchip we can locate the owner through the local Andalucian website (RAIA) or through the European Network. The importance of keeping the registered information (most important are the telephone numbers) on these websites up to date is essential because we will never find the owner without correct contact details. Once the owner has been contacted we will then keep the animal at the clinic after they have been examined by a veterinarian until the owner comes to pick him or her up. We have witnessed many happy reunions!!

An animal without a microchip however will have to be taken to a refuge centre as AAA, ADANA, REFUGIO MALAGA etc. We will provide you with the directions.

Stray kittens and puppies MIGHT be taken in for homing if they are healthy and socially adapted on decision of our head nurse or the veterinarians and availability. Motherless kittens and puppies that cannot feed themselves will be euthanized unless the finder would like to foster them until homable.

A severely injured animal will receive emergency treatment and will then be relocated to a refuge centre or when the injuries are fatal will be euthanized. The Ayuntamiento charges us 15 euro per animal to collect them, no matter what animal it is. These expenses will be covered by our Strayfund to which anyone can kindly donate what they can.

Stray animals can also be taken in by their finder or taken care of in the environment they were found. We neutralize numerous stray cats and dogs at our clinic at a special price thanks to donations given to us by clients. The cats that are in the TNR (Trap Neuter Release) programme will be marked by cutting the right ear tip to prevent them being trapped and anaesthesised again.

REMEMBER THAT PICKING AN ANIMAL UP FROM THE STREET ALSO MAKES YOU RESPONSIBLE FOR ITS FUTURE
